It says much about the state of affairs when the primary if not the only goal of “fitness” seems to be fat loss. Repeatedly that is what I encounter on one fitness site, magazine, book, or post, after another. Consider what fitness is beyond fat loss. If people would attend more to simply getting in shape and increasing their ability to perform rather than using fat loss as the prevailing measuring stick then fat loss would and does happen all by itself. Looking back at my athletic career I don’t recall a single person, until recently, coming out for whatever activity it was (track, xc, climbing, martial arts, et all) in order to lose weight/body fat. We did it to increase performance and the love of movement. We have fallen far. I think a better vision than mere fat loss is required.
